It’s the Magnetic North Tour 2018. Loud music – metals sounds, – headbanging rhythms. Its March 29/18, late and where else should you have been other than House of Targ on Bank Street Ottawa where Woodhawk and company become a force and deliver a heavy metal show as it should be.
MONOBROW
The night started with Ottawa’s own Monobrow who brought their individual brand of Rock to the stage. A heavy metal instrumental band that played tightly as a group, played cool simple but effective riffs and at times had those familiar sounds of Black Sabbath.
MOUNTAIN DUST
Mountain Dust launched right into it with their very heavy hard rock sound, bluesy riffs and had the crowd lined tight up against the stage. This Montreal QC based band were an immediate hit and had the crowd headbanging and signing along through to the end.
WOODHAWK
Finally Woodhawk took to the stage with their Magnetic North Tour 2018 and they did not disappoint. This Calgary, AB based band with clean clear vocals, distinctive metal sound and riffs driven songs held the audience attention and left them chanting for more.
The lead singer/guitarist delivered commanding powerful vocals with authority and straight ahead riff magic.on the guitar. A treat for the guitarist in the crowd.
The low deep rhythmic bass tones of a very active and entertaining bass player reminded me of the great Flea of Red Hot Chili Peppers. Not only a talented bass player he also does back up vocals that fit right in the pocket.
The drummer is solid, rhythmic and lively and entertained by drumming from a standing poaition, sitting and anything between. Don’t take your eyes off this guy.
There’s one song they played off their album called A New Hope which is all about Star Wars. Gauging by the crowd reaction when they played it, I’d say its a huge hit. These guys are no “one hit wonder” and will be around for a long time. Make sure to catch them when they visit your area.
THUNDERKOK
The final band of the night was Thunderkok who brought their own unique brand of metal to the stage. With songs in their catalog such as Pissed My Jeans” and “Bongkiller” you kind of know what you’re in for. It’s loud, spattered with guitar chugging and catchy riffs, heavy smoke covering the stage in a haze and beer. The crowd loved it and couldn’t get enough of them. All in all a good night.
