Here at Sound Check Entertainment we have always been huge supporters of Women In Music. It’s no secret that women struggle in this business, regardless of their talent or popularity. A year ago we joined forces with our friends at Country 101.1 and GallantMEDIA to launch the FavFive t-shirt campaign, a campaign that has since raised thousands of dollars for Women In Music Canada. With so much amazing new music coming out each week from so many incredible female artists, both known and unknown to the world, we thought it would be fun to showcase new music every Friday. The only catch? The artist / song has to have a female connection (female artist, female singer etc..).

Our first edition of This One’s For the Girls features 5 incredible female artists and a collaboration between a trio of young ladies and the son of the songwriter of one of the Dixie Chicks’ most popular songs.

RaeLynn

First up, RaeLynn. We caught RaeLynn at Boots and Hearts this summer where she won over all of our hearts with her personality and her inspiring message. RaeLynn is back with a new single and a new record deal with Florida Georgia Line’s new record label, Round Here Records. RaeLynn joins Canaan Smith and Dylan Schneider on the label, so far.  Her new single, “Bra Off”, co-written with Emily Weisband and Josh Kerr, has RaeLynn comparing breaking up with an ex to taking your bra off at the end of the day.

“Breaking up with you was like taking my bra off Feeling free and loose like this T-shirt I got on I should be crying, grieving some kind of loss But it’s like taking this pink and lacy suffocating bra off”

Lindsay Ell

Next up is on of our favourite Canadian girls, Lindsay Ell. Lindsay paid a visit to Ottawa’s own Overflow Brewery a few weeks ago and if you were there you heard this song. “I Don’t Love You” is a classic breakup song but when you mix it with Lindsay’s vocals and musicianship it will give you chills. If you’ve ever been through a breakup this song is relatable. You can’t listen to the music you used to listen to together or do the things you used to do together, that’s what this song is about! It’s about breaking up with someone but trying to convince yourself that you don’t love them or miss them anymore!

Rose Cousins

JUNO Winner and Grammy Nominated songwriter Rose Cousins released the debut single, “The Benefits of Being Alone”, off her forthcoming album Bravado, due February 21, 2020, via Outside MusicBravado is a record for those who struggle with loneliness and those wishing they had more time alone. It’s for those attempting to make their hearts go in more than one direction and those trying to make it go in just one. It’s for those who present a version of themselves to the world that doesn’t quite match how they feel inside. It’s for those who feel misunderstood or unseen. It’s for those who have a hard time saying what they feel, who hide or can’t let themselves off the hook. It’s for those asking, “is this it?” and questioning if the character they play in the movie of their lives is authentic or just a role they’ve accepted. It’s for those who have a hard time asking for help and for those desperate for and terrified of change. The record is flanked by two distinct renditions of the same song, The Benefits of Being Alone/ The Reprise reinforcing the record’s examination of emotional duality. Catch Rose Cousins in Ottawa, Toronto, Halifax, Fredericton and Charlottetown this coming March. Visit www.rosecousins.com for full dates and ticket details.

Kelsea Ballerini

It’s been quite a year for Kelsea Ballerini. In April she was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry by Carrie Underwood, in the same month she embarked on her hugely successful Miss Me More tour in support of Unapologetically. In July Ballerini confirmed that work on her third studio album was complete and slated for release in 2020. In September she released the debut single from the album “Homecoming Queen?”, the song debuted at number 22 on the Country Airplay chart, making it Ballerini’s highest debut on the chart to date and then today we get the second single from the album “Club”. This catchy upbeat single is actually about NOT wanting to go out to the club. The chorus goes: I don’t wanna go to the club, I don’t wanna watch everybody around me try to hook up, And say stuff they don’t mean, And get drunk and get cheap, So what’s wrong with me?, ‘Cause I don’t wanna go to the club.

I think most of us can related, to the second verse: I already know it ain’t worth it in the morning, oh-oh, And, yeah, I like the high, I just don’t like payin’ for it, I’m stressin’ over conversations, But now that’s anxiety that I’m erasin’, ‘Cause lately.

Country music has become a bit of a drinkers anthem. Most of the songs involved some sort of alcohol and getting drunk and partying it up. It’s kind of refreshing to see an artist come out with a song that’s about being responsible and not wanting to go to the club just to be cool or just to fit in. I suspect with songs like “Club” and “Homecoming Queen?” already out there 2020 is going to be another big year for this young superstar.

The song reached #1 on both the Canada Country Tracks and the US Hot Country Songs (Billboard) charts and peaked at #27 on the US Billboard Hot 100. Today 20 years later Runaway June and Levi Hummon, son of Marcus Hummon, release their rendition of the song and it’s red hot!
