CANADIAN ROCK GROUP TO LEAD THE WAY IN THE COUNTDOWN TO GREY CUP KICKOFF
WORLD-RENOWNED CALGARY STAMPEDE SHOWBAND TO PERFORM O CANADA
24 OCTOBER 2019 (TORONTO, ON) – The Canadian Football League (CFL) has unveiled JUNO award-winners, The Beaches, as the SiriusXM Kickoff Show act for the 107th Grey Cup presented by Shaw in Calgary on November 24. Six-time World Association of Marching Show Bands (WAMSB) champions, the Calgary Stampede Showband, and a guest vocalist from the Young Canadians School of Performing Arts, have been tabbed to open the evening’s festivities by performing the national anthem. Beginning at 6 p.m. ET/4 p.m. MT, the broadcast will air live on TSN and RDS – Canada’s home of the CFL.
The Beaches and the Calgary Stampede Showband join a star-studded musical line-up which already features Keith Urban as the star of the Freedom Mobile Grey Cup Halftime Show. Both The Beaches and Keith Urban’s performances are part of the ongoing partnership between the CFL and Universal Music Canada that includes in-game music exclusivity and regular season collaborations as part of the Thursday Night Football series.
The Beaches released their debut studio album, Late Show, in 2017, garnering widespread acclaim while building a dedicated fanbase throughout the country. Chart-topping hits Money and T-Shirt, which held the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Rock Chart for nine weeks, earned the band the 2018 JUNO for Breakthrough Group of the Year.
Earlier this year, the Toronto-based quartet released its third EP, The Professional, highlighted by the top 10 singles Fascination and Snake Tongue. In addition to supporting the likes of The Rolling Stones and Foo Fighters, The Beaches, has been showcased in a number of the world’s largest music festivals, including Osheaga, WayHome, SXSW, Austin City Limits, Download, and more.
The SiriusXM Kickoff Show performance reunites the band with the CFL after having played at Hamilton’s Tim Hortons Field as part of the 2018 Thursday Night Football Concert Series.
“We’re so excited to bring our sound and energy to the Grey Cup,” enthused lead singer and bassist Jordan Miller. “We’ve played in Calgary a couple of times before and we absolutely loved it, but to do it again with tens of thousands of people in person and millions more through the broadcast at such a huge event will be incredible – we can’t wait!”
After kicking off Canada’s Biggest Party, The Beaches will continue preparations for a busy winter and spring ahead. Universal Music Canada and the band will release its highly-anticipated sophomore album in early 2020 and embark as headliners on the recently-announced cross-Canada The Professional Tour, which opens in Victoria on February 6 and culminates in a pair of hometown shows at The Danforth Music Hall in Toronto on February 28 and 29, before heading out to the U.S. and Europe. Additional information, including a full listing of tour dates, is available at thebeachesband.com.
Founded in 1971, the Calgary Stampede Showband is comprised of 165 musicians, colour guard and dancers between the ages of 15 and 21 from Calgary and area. The group annually performs at more than 200 events, including concerts, parades and marching field show, serving as musical ambassadors for its namesake. This past summer, the Calgary Stampede played host to the prestigious WAMSB World Championship where the Showband claimed its sixth world title. In recognition of the feat and the group’s support of the community, Calgary City Council declared July 29, 2019 as Calgary Stampede Showband Day.
For this special performance of the national anthem, The Calgary Stampede Showband will welcome Lindsey Kelly – a guest vocalist from The Young Canadians School of Performing Arts. The School is comprised of 120 dedicated youth from across Calgary who hone their skills in dance, voice or performance in a professional setting, while representing the Calgary Stampede Foundation and the Calgary Stampede.
