Canadian Music Week is pleased to announce Gord Downie as the 2019 recipient of the Allan Slaight Humanitarian Spirit Award. Outside of his career as a musician, poet and front-man for The Tragically Hip, Gordcommitted his time to causes close to his heart. He dedicated the last few years of his life educating the country on its past, moving toward reconciliation, and also spent many years working with the Lake Ontario Waterkeepers among other organizations. Alongside his brothers in The Hip, Gord and the band supported their hometown community of Kingston during their career, giving back to local organizations with proceeds from their Kingston shows.

Barney Bentall recently played the Azrieli Studio as part of the NAC Presents program, an initiative aimed at bringing Canadian talent, emerging or established, to the national stage. Donning his harmonica, guitar and hat, he was joined by two talented musicians, Eric Reed on mandolin/guitar and Anne Lindsay on violin.

It’s 2017, Canada is 150, the JUNO Awards are in Ottawa for only the 3rd time ever, and it’s an amazing year to be a woman in music. Tonight 8 awards were handed out at Canadian Tire Centre out which 4 were given to women and the rest to either the Tragically Hip / Gord Downie, Leonard Cohen or Shawn Mendes.
