Starting off the Summerland Tour at London Music Hall was Local H. If I’m being honest I wasn’t entirely familiar with a lot of their music being as I was a very young child for most of the 90’s but I can definitely say I’m sad I wasn’t a fan sooner! This two man band sure as hell didn’t disappoint and they were definitely a crowd favourite.
What I really appreciated about Local H was their heavy punk influence mixed in with 90s grunge that we all know and love. They played loud, hard, loud, fast, and did I mention loud and the crowd got a taste of everything you would expect from a 90s rock concert.
The highlight of their set for me was when Local H had the drummers from Everclear and Marcy Playground join them on stage for a triple drummer track that was beyond incredible and basically made you feel like your heart was going to beat right out of your chest. Glorious just glorious I tell ya.
In the middle of the lineup for the night was none other than Marcy Playground. There are so many great things that can be said about this band. Front man John Wozniak is an incredible artist and such a huge supporter of all things music and up and coming artists. One of the highlights of my night was not only the bands on stage but watching a childhood friend who has become great friends with Wozniak stand in the crowd singing along with every word having the time of his life, Just one of those moments that reminds you how refreshing a good night of great music can be.
Marcy Playground ended the show with “Sex and Candy” to everyone’s delight, I don’t think here was a single person that wasn’t singing along and reliving that 90’s nostalgia.
Headlining the Summerland Tour was my personal favourite of the night in Everclear and their fantastic style of grungy-pop punk. I’m not even entirely sure how to describe how excited I was to see this band live. Growing up with an older brother who is a musician, I was introduced to his style of music early on in life and I vividly remember being a kid and hearing Everclear for the first time. I was sitting with my brother when he unpackaged his Big Shiny Tunes 5 CD and hearing “Wonderful” for the very first time at 10 years old and have been a fan since, stealing their albums from my brothers music collection when he wasn’t home coming full circle to photographing them and enjoying the show with my brother and some of my childhood friends. I definitely described this night to many people as one of the best nights of my life.
Some highlight tracks of the night were “I Will Buy You A New Life”, “Sparkle and Fade”, “So Much For the Afterglow”, “Wonderful”, “Father of Mine” and of course, “Santa Monica”.
The Summerland Tour 2018 was such a solid and well rounded lineup that left everyone in the crowd energized at the end of the night because well let’s be honest a good rock show is so much more fun when it comes laced with 90’s nostalgia. We look forward to what the Summerland Tour has instore for us in 2019.
