Well, that day is here. The concert was an resounding success. Rosalía sold out the 2000+ venue faster than I dare to admit.
She started her set with “Maldición” and finish it with her hit “Malamente”. That is the song responsible for the international outbreak of Rosalía and is in her second album, El mal querer (2018). The entire album has been acclaimed by critics and she was awarded two Latin Grammy’s for it.
She interpreted that album almost completely with a sole reference to her first album Los Angeles (2017) that came about when she sang “Catalina”. One of the most emotionally powerful moments of the night.
My favorite personal moment was when Rosalía did an homage to 70’s Spanish music when she performed her version of “Te estoy amando locamente” a hit at that time of the band “Las Grecas” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U4il05Pt5Nk). I believe I could hear some “olés” being shouted by the audience.
The stage production was invigorating and provocative as if it was a flamenco show but without the guitars. Rosalía and her dancers, evolving on the stage with a sole central runway just like any other current pop act (Hello Dua Lipa) added a touch of Spanish passion to an already passionate evening.
Never before in Spanish popular music has something similar been seen, at least that I remember. Those present at REBEL knew that they were living a special moment. I cannot wait for her to come back to Canada and maybe add a couple more stops.
