Meeting the Pixies is not something I ever expected would happen to me. Meeting them and entertaining full conversations with them was something I could not fathom. Legends in their own footprints, the art rock noise band brought a familiar set of material to the stage on last week in Montreal at MTELUS.
With chaotic classics like Debaser, Where Is My Mind, an acoustic version of Wave Of Mutilation, a stunning encore of Into The White, and a whole strew of other incredible time capsules and new cuts, there is really no shortage of memories and emotion attached to each song.
The dynamics of their performance have absolutely changed. This is a band that plows through their material and keeps the audience entranced in a sort of hypnotic high noon showdown. And as they draw their weapons, they abandon most modern sensibilities. While the shows might not be the dynamic fire-breathing collisions of years past, this is a band that is hardly past their prime. Their unique and frenetic energy is still strong and vivid with just their guitars in hand.
Stumbling into a back parking lot to shake hands with heroes and falling in love like a fan-boy who just heard Dolittle for the first time is a beautiful feeling. Nostalgia is the story and their performance is worth repeating.
