When Paul Brandt came to Kingston last week with his The Journey Tour, he brought some heavy hitters with him! Several of his friends from the prairies came along.
The Hunter brothers started things off with their non-stop explosion energy. They are a group of 5 blood brothers and you would have to look long and hard to find a group of guys who have more fun onstage. The Hunters grew up in rural Saskatchewan and besides the family farm, they lived for hockey and music. How Canadian is that! Ty handles the lead vocals for the band but they can all sing and the harmonies you will hear at a show is nothing short of spectacular. I love this band because they are enthusiastic and fresh, the energy meter is off the scale and no Hunter Brothers show is complete without the now patented backflip from Brock. If I were a betting man, I would put my money on these guys becoming a big thing.
This show was my first chance to see Jess Moskaluke in concert and I‘m glad I had the chance. She has a big voice in a small package and a pleasure to listen to. Jess released an EP in 2012 called Catch Me If You Can, which showed she already knew her way around a song. Fast forward to 2019, two more Eps, a full-length album, a Christmas EP and a Juno award and Jess has only become more confident in her music. Her set may have been on the short side but Jess treated the Kingston crowd to a great show.
High Valley, another brother act from the prairies were next. Brad and Curtis grew up about 500 miles north of Edmonton where they had no TV and no radio. They chose music as their way of occupying themselves and we should be glad they did. Every time I see them, they impress me a bit more and that’s good. Brad and Curtis have perfected their show and win their crowd from the second they walk onstage. They interact with the audience and even send out some free shirts. When you look around the crowd, it’s immediately clear that people know these songs!
It was finally time for the headliner for the evening, Paul Brandt started the show fading in from the darkness, hat pulled down low over his eyes, just a silhouette at first. He can rock with the best of them and belt out a ballad just as easily. Paul puts on a great show. He delivers a high level of showmanship that he has honed over the past 24 years in the business. As he went through his many hits, the crowd sang along. If you haven’t seen Paul live, do yourself a favour and go next time you have a chance.
We had the chance to chat with Paul when he was in Ottawa! Check out the interview below:
