The Lazys hit the stage first last Friday night on the western leg of the co-headlining Nothin’ But Another Bottle tour along side their rock and roll brothers, The Wild.
We rolled into this early show fashionably late, and the Lazy’s already had the crowd moving to tunes like “Get ready”. I love the Calgary music scene, mainly because they don’t seem to need an excuse to get loud and rowdy, at any time of the day. So this early show definitely did not phase the crowd who were primed and ready to get down and dirty, all before 8 pm. I eagerly anticipated the ruckus that would surely ensue as the night went on.
Riff driven hard rockers from Australia, The Lazys show is like a non-stop marathon of rock and roll. Singer Leon Harrison runs back and forth across the stage, making sure not one member of the audience was slacking in their horn wielding duties.
They fed the crowd the kind of guitar riffs to make your heart skip a beat. These rockers from down under know how to rock, and are clearly loving the ride.
I always enjoy rock shows at The Marquee, as a mid-sized venue it seems to be a great fit for the genre. That may be because with its 3 bars staffed up and ready to serve, there’s never an empty glass in the house.
After a quick refill and gear change, The Wild stormed the stage with the unapologetic rock and roll they’ve become known for. I’ve been witness to several of their shows over the past few years, and can attest to the work these guys are putting into their craft. They blew me away from the first time I saw them, and yet they continue to grow as performers while consistently delivering the gritty rock tunes we’ve come to love. I personally enjoy the addition of a giant super-soaker into their act. The show is a must-see, but ladies, just make sure your mascara is waterproof.
The Wild have clocked some serious mileage in the past year, touring Canada, the US, and the UK. Building their army of fans with each and every stop on the map. They’re putting in the work and deserve all the success that is coming their way. Lead singer and guitarist Dylan Villain took a moment to talk to the fans about what rock really is and I know I’m not the only one who would agree that the masses have forgotten what rock and roll sounds like. There are a handful of bands on the scene who still know how to rock, and The Wild are certainly no exception.
Villain kicked things up a notch by announcing a new record that’s in the works which he promises will be harder and louder. The revved-up crowd got what they wanted and were treated to a sampling of their new jams. I know I can’t wait to get my hands on the album.
This band knows their audience, and you feel that they try to connect with them in a real way while they’re rocking their hearts out, which is part of what makes them so genuine and likable. Showing appreciation, Dylan passes around a bottles worth of Crown Royal during the closing songs of their set. Anyone who didn’t know The Wild before the show surely left a fan.
The Wild remind us that nice boys don’t play rock and roll, and that’s exactly that way we like it.
