My Son The Hurricane brought their The Shape to Come to Funk Tour to House of Targ in Ottawa Wednesday night to a very appreciative enthusiastic crowd of fans and fans to be and certainly gave them everything they had and a touch more.
There’s really no other way for me to describe the performance that My Son The Hurricane put on at House of Targ other than a dance party on a floor that might not have seen more dancing shoes on it since that last time they played here. It would be hard to imagine more of a good time on a Wednesday night in Ottawa than what was happening here. Adding to the intensity of the night is that these guys aren’t just a visual band but they are also very good musicians making what I call impressive tasteful music. With nine people on the stage and everything from drums to bass to guitars to horns they brought it all together delivering a rhythmic very tasty sound from start to finish. There are no weak links to be found in My Son The Hurricane. Scattered throughout were solos from various instruments which demonstrated the command each member had of their’s and how to draw out the precise notes required to drive this crowd’s energy level up one more notch on the level meter.
Described as a Progressive Hip-Hop / Jazz / Funk / Brass Band, My Son The Hurricane bring everything together in one cohesive unit in what appears to be effortlessly. With 9 people on the stage tonight I was sure that crowding was going to be an issue but I couldn’t have been more wrong. Coordination at this level doesn’t just happen overnight but these guys do it with relative grace. It’s as though the closeness makes each of them better – possibly fearing the other would notice their mistakes all of which was beneficial to the audience tonight.
Vocalists Jacob Bergsma and Sylvie Annette Kindree are both masters at their craft delivering very deliberate and tactful vocals and sounds that the crowd were truly appreciative of joining in singing along to each song ending with loud screams and clapping. The vocals were layered nicely among the songs sung which not only says something about their songwriting but also on this night the abilities of the guy on the soundboard.
Overall the My Son The Hurricane performance was delivered perfectly, was very engaging and well, funky, which worked in their favor filling the dance floor all night. It was a delight to have the chance to participate in the night and I for sure will be in attendance in their next Ottawa stop.
