Grammy Award-Nominated sisters Rebecca and Megan Lovell are the force behind the roots rock/blues band Larkin Poe originally from North Georgia and currently based in Nashville. The band also features bassist Tarka Layman and drummer Kevin McGowan. They are currently with the Monster Energy Outbreak Tour and graced the stage at The Newport Music Hall  Friday night in Columbus, Ohio.

Larkin Poe opened the show with “Self Made Man” – the title of their 4th studio album released last year. From that same album they performed “Holy Ghost Fire” and country-blues favorite “Back Down South.” They talked about how at the beginning of 2020 they had the album in the can, thinking “We’re going to dominate this year!” Then, well, the pandemic hit and like everyone else in the music industry, they had to change their game plan in respect to touring. The album itself, however, went straight to #1 on Billboard’s US Blues Album chart on the sheer strength of their talent.

From their Grammy-Nominated 2018 release Venom & Faith, they played “Bleach Blonde Bottle Blues”  and “Blue Ridge Mountains.”   They also got the crowd revved up with covers of Son Volt’s “Preachin’ Bluesand Bo Diddley’s “Who Do You Love.”  All in all, they played 15 songs, showcasing their originals and covers of classic blues for the good-sized crowd that made their appreciation known loudly!

The Collection was supposed to be the opener for Larkin Poe but one of the members of their touring party got Covid so Rebecca’s husband Tyler Bryant stepped in to start the show.

Tyler treated the audience to some downright gritty blues rock goodness with just a guitar, a mic and a kick drum. He opened up big with “Born Rockin” from the EP Rust N Roll released in September 2021 (with his band The Shakedown). Another highlight off the same EP was a cover of Arthur Crudup’s 1946 blues classic, “That’s Alright” (which we know Elvis covered for his debut single in 1954.)

On stage, Tyler talked about how he was glad to be back on stage playing live, having missed the interaction with the crowd. He blasted through an electrifying 1/2 hour set.  Being the professional that his is, Tyler was able to seamlessly take over the opening set and give the audience a thrilling show!

Bryant & The Shakedown are set to go on tour starting October 18th. Check for dates on their website here.
