“As a Canadian boy playing country music, being asked to perform at the Calgary Stampede is an unbelievable honor.” Kiefer acknowledged.
His own personal ties to the rodeo are reflected in Reckless & Me … the name of his latest album and the first single. It’s an homage to his days on the circuit in the 90s with his horse named Reckless.
Having somehow managed to perform 200 shows in 2018 along, he proved himself to be just as comfortable on a stage in front of a large audience as he is being in front of a camera. He covered the entire stage, jumping off the riser for the drummer and keyboard player, went side to side and even knelt down on his knees up against the edge of the stage several times.
Most of the rather eclectic crowd – not all of what one would typically expect at the Nashville North stage – didn’t know what to expect and had various reasons for attending … many were there because of Kiefer Sutherland, the actor, but by the end of the first song, everyone cheered on Kiefer Sutherland, the musician.
He bore his heart and soul in the stories and song lyrics … toasted the crowd with a shot of J & B … and actually ended up playing longer than scheduled and literally wrapped up just as the nightly Stampede fireworks started booming off in the distance.
He was supposed to end the set and come back out for a 2 song encore but there was so much energy being fed from the crowd that he just pretty much kept going and didn’t leave the stage at all until he got through his whole set list.
I think it’s safe to say that with a sold out show in Edmonton the night before and the rowdiness of the crowd at the Calgary Stampede, that Alberta has left a lasting impression on him … and he’ll hopefully find his way back soon.
