July Talk have finally embarked upon their long awaited 16 city trek around the country and their first Ontario stop was in Ottawa!

Their Canadian run — called the “Live at Last” tour — began in at Quebec City’s Impérial Bell and they will wrap up in BC right before the holidays, with dates in Vancouver and Victoria on December 22 and 23, respectively. A variety of talented opening acts will perform alongside them. Ottawa was lucky to be serenaded by rock band Little Junior from Toronto. Some fans may have caught them previously as they’ve opened for Hollerado on many occasions. Weezer-like guitar riffs paired with several gay-themed songs and an anti-misogynistic mindset would be the best way to describe the band. If they came to entertain and get the crowd pumped up for July Talk, they certainly achieved that goal.

Althought the lineup outside the newly minted Bronson Centre Music Theatre wrapped its way around the block, live music fans were all smiles while waiting for the main act to take the stage. The lockdown seems to have made everyone realize just how fortunate we all are to be treated to a great performance from time to time. As the lights dimmed and the roadies left the stage, the crowd started to buzz. If you’ve never witnessed a live July Talk show, you really should check them out. I’ve seen them live five or six times and they are magical on stage. In fact, they have a group of super fans who never miss a show. Someone in the front row for this show has seen them over 50 times! As Leah slinked on to the stage in a sexy sequin covered gown, everyone commented on how beautiful she looked.

This was the band’s first full tour since the pandemic started, although they have managed to sneak in a few distanced and virtual performances. As they said in the tour announcement, July Talk was born on the stage and they were overjoyed to be back in front of a live audience. Peter started off the night with his tell-tale gravelly voice paving the way for Leah’s sweet tones. Their joy at being on stage again was contagious and the crowd was singing along to some of their new material, as well as classics like Guns + Ammunition. It was another memorable performance. Next stop is in Kington where our photographer and reviewer Ron will be taking in the sights and sounds. Stay tuned for that!
