Jann Arden took to the stage at Vancouver’s PNE with a near capacity crowd of fans young and old. As usual, she not only entertained the crowd with her hits from the past few decades, but in between songs, she infused the audience with her signature dry humor.
She opened welcoming everyone to “a 6 hour show” … With her debut album “Time for Mercy” having been released 25 years ago, she’s had 19 top 10 singles from 14 albums … THAT along with her wit is more than enough to entertain a crowd for a marathon 6 hour show! Unfortunately, she was kidding … but, I’m ready and willing whenever you are Jann!
Based on comments made during the first part of her set, we’re not likely to see Jann Arden on any of the rides at the PNE Fair anytime soon … every time she pointed out a ride she would notice behind the seating, a large number of fans in the reserved seats would turn to see what she was referring to.
Mixed in some songs from the new album with classics, the audience was treated to stories of her song writing experiences in a way only Jann could share. For example, when she lived in Vancouver in the mid 80s, she spent a lot of time playing in Gastown … until she literally got punched in in the temple and a guy stole all her money. She said that was a great thing because we got “Unloved” as a result – so thank you to the guy that nicked Jann’s “whole 4 dollars”.
Girl power anthem – “Not your Little Girl” – from her latest album was written with Bob Rock a few years ago before the “me too” movement and speaks Jann’s example of following your own path, not letting people change you to become something they think you should. Jann has never gone the convectional route or tried to fit the mold of successful singer/songwriter and had proven to become a force to be reckoned with in spite of it … She is as a multi-talented musician, author, actor, activist, broadcaster, and philanthropist.
Jann is on tour this fall across Canada with over 30 stops in a lot of smaller cities and venues … She can also be seen making guest appearances on TV shows such as Wynonna, which is filmed in her hometown of Calgary, as well as Working Girls … and she just MAY be working on preproduction for her own show.
