The Goo Goo Dolls have been playing the festival circuit this summer. Last night they stopped at Vancouver’s PNE Amphitheatre.
There are a few more outdoor shows before they transition back to the enclosed venues after Labor Day. Shows this fall will commemorate the 20th anniversary of “Dizzy up the Girl”.
Watching Robby Takac run around on stage barefoot, the facial expressions, and the leg kicks just screams someone who loves performing and doing it for a crowd. A few of the fans “grumbled” that he wouldn’t stand still long enough so they could get a photo of him with their phone.
He does, on occasion, manage to be in the same spot, briefly, when he needs to accompany frontman Johnny Rzeznik on vocals …
The smoke from the BC wildfires was exceptionally harsh leading into the start of the Goo Goo Dolls set but that didn’t stop fans from attending … and singing … and dancing in the aisles … and trying to take photos with their phones while doing all of that.
The other thing that caught my eye was the incredibly large collection of guitars they bring along. They both seem to swap out guitars after every song. It’s easy to spot because most of them have an interesting collection of stickers on them.
If you haven’t had a chance to see them in person, they’ve released a special live limited edition album on vinyl entitled “The Audience is this way” that can only be purchased through indie retail stores. It will give you a glimpse of the live sounds, but you’d still be missing out on the performance.
