Montreal’s sound was anything but silence on Friday night, as it played host to a quintessential arena rock show by twenty-year veterans Disturbed at Place Bell in Laval. The hard rock icons of the 2000s welcomed a packed crowd for a two hour long musical and visual spectacle.
Opening the night were Canadian rockers Three Days Grace, who are no stranger to the big stage. In September, Three Days Grace reached a milestone moment, where they passed Van Halen on the mainstream rock charts for most number one singles. It speaks volumes of the band’s abilities to continue to release hit after hit. From memorable hooks and choruses of Matt Walst/Adam Gontier to the chunky guitar riffs of Barry Stock.
Since they were the only opener, Three Days Grace’s set was more like a headliner slot, playing a twelve-song set featuring songs such as ‘Riot,’ ‘The Mountain.’ And ‘I Hate Everything About You.’ Montreal showed up in droves as nobody wanted to miss their set after a sold out show at the Metropolis a few months prior.
After a quick stage setup, it was Disturbed’s turn. A video started playing showing the rise of Disturbed and the growing fan base at each show. This was their largest headlining tour to date, coming off a sold-out Madison Square Garden show in New York.
Making sure there were never any lulls in the performance, Disturbed used plenty of visuals. Several examples were tons of pyrotechnics (flaming pianos, ropes on fire dropping from the ceiling, etc.), an acoustic set surrounded by candles in the middle of the crowd, and an array of laser lights. With songs such as ‘Indestructible’ and ‘Ten Thousand Fists’ Disturbed had the crowd in a frenzy at points. Mosh pits started out in different parts of the floor and reached the tipping point by the time Down With The Sickness was played. Lead singer David Draiman showed his vocal prowess on two covers of ‘Land of Confusion’ and the most notable ‘Sound of Silence.’
Disturbed showed why they can fill arenas, as the night was able to be visually stunning but more importantly musically captivating. Both Three Days Grace, Disturbed and fans alike went away knowing that it was a show to remember. Draiman left thanking the crowd, saying ‘Montreal, I wish we could pack you up and take you with us to every show.’
