The Leon’s Centre (formerly the K-Rock Centre) in Kingston has been home to some really excellent concerts over the years, offering a quaint atmosphere where even the biggest act seem closer and larger than life. And last week’s Chicago concert was no exception.
As far as experiential musical moments go, this ranks up there with some greats. A tremendously talented band that spanned a number of decades come together on a stage, featuring dueling percussionists, two main centre vocalists, no shortage of horns and keys, more talent than many modern musical performers can comprehend, and literally a catalogue of noteworthy songs that literally were and continue to be the soundtrack of so many people’s lives, one could argue that this Rock & Roll Hall of Fame band doesn’t always get their due in the annals of rock royalty.
Playing two full length sets that included a litany of greatest hits such as “25 or 6 to 4,” “Where Do We Go From Here,” “Saturday In The Park,” “Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?,” and later day classics like “You’re The Inspiration,” the band left the audience of Chicago-enthusiasts feeling nostalgic, jovial and 18 years old all over again.
With an impressive collection of musical masters, I can humbly say at 31 years old that Chicago have been playing at a calibre higher than most for longer than I’ve been alive.
If you get the chance to see them live, take it. The advantage of doing it at the Leon’s Centre is that I got to enjoy thirty songs of legendary talent and I could almost reach out and touch them.
