Up With People bring simple message of peace, love and acceptance back to Canada
It’s been almost 20 years since the international sensation Up With People has performed on Canadian soil. That all changed last night as a cast of 100 youth from all over the world brought down the house at the Meridian Theatres @ Centrepointe in Ottawa.
Up with People Returning to Canada
About 30 years ago I was introduced to Up With People when they paid a visit to my home town in Northern Ontario. There was something so enticing about the cast and the production that many of us quickly applied for a chance to travel with a future tour. Although I failed in my first attempt a friend of mine from high school was successful in his first bid and travelled with Up With People the following year. I applied again the next time they came to town and this time I was accepted…unfortunately various circumstances prevented me from joining the cast it’s something that has stuck with me ever since.
The experience of getting to know the cast members (we were a host family) and seeing the impact they have on the community was something I’ll never forget so when I heard that Up With People was coming back to Canada I knew I had to reach out to help them spread the word!
Kalabante welcomes Ottawa to Africa
Saturday night I took a drive East and left the city to be “welcomed to Africa” by the insanely talented ,Montreal based, group Kalabante. This African Circus group presented the short version of their show to an eager crowd at the Shenkman Arts Centre. The show symbolizes the joy, playfulness and joie de vivre of African youth. This was not only visually appealing, with incredible acrobatic stunts, but also music to my ears as the performers were also brilliant musicians.

The Music of The Night takes over Ottawa as The Phantom of the Opera explodes into the NAC
Anyone who knows me knows that musical theatre has been my passion for as long as I can remember. That fire was lit when I first saw the Phantom of the Opera with Colm Wilkinson at Toronto’s storied Pantages Theatre. Last night we were invited to the National Arts Centre to watch Cameron MackIntosh’s new production of The Phantom of the Opera and it was spectacular.
