A singer/songwriter? A folk musician? Some new age indie artist? When approaching her third album, aptly titled Separate Rooms, Megan Bonnell realized she was all those things, comfortable to be in various places simultaneously.
Royal Tusk reflects on current times on new album Tusk II
Since Edmonton rockers Royal Tusk’s new single ‘Aftermath’ was released in early October, it has gained over one million streams on Spotify only. Equally to the song, the music video for it is also raw and chaotic, and reflects on the mayhem and the normalization of the violence we see on television and social media every day.
Abby Stewart sparkles in her Joshua Bates Centre debut!
Athens, Ontario. A small, one-stoplight, town about 1 hour north east of Kingston and about 90 mins south west of Ottawa. Doesn’t sound like much but what many don’t know is that at the corner, by that stoplight, sits the Joshua Bates Centre, affectionately known as the JBC by locals. Over the years the JBC has developed a bit of a reputation as a venue that has played host to some of the biggest names in country music before they were stars; among them Johnny Reid, George Canyon, Gord Bamford, Brett Kissel and now Abby Stewart.

The Headstones: Picture of Health 25 years later – a Cautionary Tale
On a chilly Friday night, a sizable crowd descended upon Calgary’s Grey Eagle Casino Event Centre. Two names on the bill: The Matchstick Skeletons and the Headstones – the former, a new project with some familiar faces, and the latter something of a Canadian rock institution, celebrating a milestone in their now decades-long career. Longtime fans may spot the oxymoron; after all, the Headstones were once known for their alt-punk “Live fast, die young, and leave a good-looking corpse” philosophy. The venue itself furthers this contrast, as fans often (and fondly) relate to having seen this band in small, dimly-lit basement venues sprinkled throughout the country, so to see the same band now fill a room as big as the Event Centre to near capacity is a bittersweet moment.

Bahamas and Tim Baker at NAC
Saturday night a ‘chill crowd’ filled the theatre at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa for Bahamas with Tim Baker. The back to back shows drew a full house each night. The night started off with St John’s native, Tim Baker. Previously the front-man of Hey Rosetta!, Tim has begun touring on his own, writing and performing new content since the band played their final shows last Christmas. Tim’s sound and voice are known around the world, however he holds a special place on the East Coast. Many of the Hey Rosetta! songs that he wrote and performed with that band are very music considered anthems in the Maritime provinces.
