There is no question that Blue Rodeo is one of those quintessentially Canadian bands whose hits are known far and wide across this great country. When you then add a venue like Massey Hall you have the perfect maelstrom for an unforgettable evening.
The venue was sold out and the audience was charged with excitement. The band came out on stage a few minutes earlier and without missing a beat led the concert goers into a singalong that lasted for almost two hours. After all the pandemic restrictions, it kind of felt like this burst of joy was overdue.
Having been around for nearly 40 years now, the band knows how to mix a set and keep the audience entertained. Blue Rodeo’s set was like a series of waves. They kept the energy going through their entire set making sure never to rest or let the audience catch a break.
They played classics as well as songs from the bands new album ‘Many a Mile’, their first release in almost five years. The album contains songs that Jim Cuddy wrote while stuck at home during the COVID pandemic.
It was nice to see Jenn Grant (who opened the show) join them onstage to add guitars and vocals to Lost Together, the final song of the night.
As I drove home from the show, I thought how lucky i was to be able to witness a great moment in Canadian music history. Blue Rodeo remains one of the best Canadian bands out there.
