Blacktop Mojo from Palestine, Texas are on the rise and are touring relentlessly in support of their self-titled 4th album which dropped today. The crowd at the Woodlands Tavern show in Columbus Ohio on Wednesday was treated to some of these new tracks, opener “Wicked Woman” and later, “Tail Lights.” (videos out now)
Their southern rock fury was also unleashed on the crowd with favorites such as Mainstream Rock top 40 hits “Burn the Ships” and “Can’t Sleep” and the powerful “It Won’t Last.” Matt James puts a lot of heart into his delivery whether he’s roaring through a rock tune or slowing it down – just him alone with his acoustic guitar in the spotlight. Definitely one of the best rock vocalists out there today.
Other members of the band are drummer Nathan Gillis, guitarists Ryan Kiefer and Chuck Wepfer and bassist Matt Curtis. These guys have such excellent stage presence that many fans were compelled to pull phones out of pockets and purses to capture the show. And who can blame them? These guys are on fire! Can’t wait to see them again when they come back through Ohio in October. Hope we hear some more of the new tracks live especially “Cough” which is easily one of the best tracks on this album.
Opening the show was Columbus’s own Rumspringa which was formed in 2020 by guitarist Cody Schrecengost and Jimmy Weaver. The hard rock band hit the stage and never let up, giving the crowd a great show with a mix of originals and covers.
