Saturday night a ‘chill crowd’ filled the theatre at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa for Bahamas with Tim Baker. The back to back shows drew a full house each night. The night started off with St John’s native, Tim Baker. Previously the front-man of Hey Rosetta!, Tim has begun touring on his own, writing and performing new content since the band played their final shows last Christmas. Tim’s sound and voice are known around the world, however he holds a special place on the East Coast. Many of the Hey Rosetta! songs that he wrote and performed with that band are very music considered anthems in the Maritime provinces.
Bahamas winding down their tour, Earthtones, had their last stop in Ottawa, with their final night on Saturday. In the past I have only seen Bahamas in festival settings, and his lively stage banter is significantly funnier than I anticipated. The Barrie native told stories of his time growing up in the small, at the time, bar town, and stories of leaving. Circling back in his banter, he carried jokes seamlessly between songs. The multi Juno nominee has worked with a number of well known artists in building his career, but has since created a name for himself through his skillful song writing, His most recent album, Earthtones, was released in January of this year and includes the singles, Bad Boys Need Love Too, and No Wrong.
Both Bahamas and Tim Baker are powerful forces on the Canadian music scene. Together this tour was unbeatable, which was made evident by their multi-city stops in Toronto (five shows at Danforth Music Hall) and Ottawa. The band ended the evening with a toast, and a standing ovation. All in all a great night at the NAC.
