On a warmish March 17, 2024, Saint Patrick’s Day, the MTelus came alive with energy to a sold-out venue for an industrial rock extravaganza featuring a trifecta of iconic bands from the 80s. Front Line Assembly, representing Vancouver, Canada, Gary Numan from UK, and Ministry hailing from Chicago, IL, USA. Ministry, touring for their latest album “HOPIUMFORTHEMASSES” released on March 1st, 2024, delivered a dynamic performance blending new releases with timeless classics.
Kicking off the night promptly at 7:00 PM, Front Line Assembly electrified the audience with a relentless 40-minute set, featuring tracks like “Mindphaser,” “Killing Grounds,” and “Millennium,” showcasing Bill’s vocals reminiscent of FLA’s heyday three decades ago.
Following suit at 8:00 PM was synth-wave pioneer Gary Numan, delivering a captivating hour-long set of hits including “Metal,” “Pray for the Pain You Serve,” and the iconic favorite “Cars,” culminating with the atmospheric “A Prayer for the Unborn,” accompanied by Gary’s masterful guitar work on his classic Les Paul.
At 9:00 PM, the enigmatic Uncle Al, sporting his trademark long black hair and signature black cowboy hat, emerged onstage with Ministry, joined by the talented ensemble of Cesar Soto, Monte Pittman, Paul D’Amour, John Bechdel, and the phenomenal Roy Mayorga. The first segment of their performance featured a series of tracks from their latest album, kicking off with “B.D.E.” before launching into classics like “N.W.O.,” “Just One Fix,” and “Stigmata,” concluding with the crowd favorites “Thieves” and “Jesus Built My Hotrod.”
After a few minutes pause, Ministry returned for an encore, igniting the stage with “Burning Inside” before inviting Gary Numan to collaborate on the electrifying finale, “Ricky’s Hand.” True to form, Al bid farewell to Montreal in his inimitable style, expressing gratitude to the audience for their unwavering support.
