Earlier this month on a Sunday afternoon/evening, Ellen DeGeneres walked into Toronto’s Scotiabank Arena. I had no idea what I was in for. Literally.
The place was packed. As I quickly realized, this crowd didn’t need any convincing. They were more than familiar with her than I was.
Hosted by Dave Kelly, who I can say played the perfect sidekick to Ellen. Kelly asked Ellen questions from her coming out as gay in the late 1990s to her friendship with music icon Prince and her first time on the iconic Johnny Carson TV show. She mentioned the fleas, the accident where she lost her girlfriend. The time she left the car running and it just rolled out down the road, causing a major roadblock while she was on her way to Johnny Carson.
However I wonder how much of what Ellen said is not something that the fans at the venue wouldn’t have not known already. My feeling is that people actually expected more than just a Q&A. I think they expected to be entertained. What they got was anything but entertainment. Inspiring but nothing they have not heard before.
