After a 10-year hiatus and 13 years since their last Montreal performance, Juno-nominated Toronto-based rap-rock band Down With Webster has reunited for a series of 2024 appearances. The band made a triumphant return at The Beanfield Theatre on December 18th, supported by Sunsetto.
Down With Webster, whose name was inspired by the title character of the 1980s sitcom Webster, originally started as a jazz band. Toronto school friends Patrick Gillett and Tyler Armes founded the group, later evolving their sound by incorporating hip-hop influences brought in by Andrew Martino and Martin Seja. The addition of rapper Cameron Hunter transformed the band into the rap-rock powerhouse fans know today.
The night’s setlist consisted of 20 songs, opening with “One in a Million.” The crowd erupted, singing and jumping along with massive energy. The band followed with fan favorites “Time to Win” and “Go Time.”
A standout moment came mid-set when the band stepped off the stage, leaving drummer Andrew Martino to deliver an electrifying drum solo. His performance included renditions of “Mario Bros,” “Seven Nation Army,” and “Killing in the Name,” showcasing his versatility and creativity. The rest of the band returned to the stage, at the end of the solo keeping the energy high for the next eleven songs.
They closed the night with a trio of hits: “Chills,” “Who Is Me,” and “Your Man.” The audience sang along word for word, creating an unforgettable atmosphere.
At the end of the night, the band threw guitar picks, drumsticks, and setlists into the crowd before heading to the merch booth to meet their fans. There, they took pictures, signed memorabilia, and talked with everyone, making it truly a night to remember.
