’90s Babies United for 2 Nights to Choir the Nostalgic Anthem “Mmmbop”, both in acoustic and full band. The Danforth opened its doors for 2 nights for a performance some of us have been waiting for the ’90s for.  Whether it was the scent of a favorite childhood meal, a familiar place that holds memories, or even the sound of an old song playing on the radio, nostalgia was in the air. Concert goers were reliving fictional Marisa Cooper’ death with help from Phantom Planet and singing one of the most misunderstood songs in history stripped down with Hanson.

Night 1 of the Underneath Experience really gave us the “Underneath” the song feeling as some of our favorite classic hits were stripped down to their bare acoustics. Night 2 provided us withe the “Experience” as we got to listen to some of the recognizable Nostalgic hits we all know and love with the full band.

Phantom Planet’s acoustic set was a captivating, intimate showcase that allowed the audience to connect deeply with a refreshing version of some favourite tracks and their iconic hit “California.” Transforming upbeat anthems into reflective ballads, accompanied by soft harmonies and gentle strumming of the guitar made the already cozy Danforth Music Hall feel even more intimate. The musical simplicity of the show allowed for a shared experience, where the audience was really able to relate to the emotions behind the songs being performed.
The set flowed effortlessly as we got to see some of the more upbeat songs become vulnerable and the slower ballad songs become hauntingly emotional. Alex Greenwald’s calming voice portrayed the actual emotion behind the lyrics, with some songs leaving the crowd visibly moved. Phantom Planet had not only reminded fans of their classic hits but also showcased a more vulnerable side, creating an unforgettable evening filled with connection.

The Hanson Brothers Taylor, Isaac and Zac graced Toronto with their presence for the first time since 2018. The beautifully curated set list set us on a journey through their beloved catalog, infused with nostalgia and genuine charm. Mixing in some of their recent songs with their classics from the ’90s, Hanson gave us one of the most intimate looks into the creative process and the emotions behind some of our favourite songs.
Watching the Brother’s transition between instruments, harmonize angelically, connect so deeply with each other AND the audience was an experience to never forget. The acoustic arrangements highlighted the intricate melodies that often get overshadowed in their more polished studio recordings. While some OG fans were prepared for what was about to come, the newer Hanson fans finally got to experience the shocking and somber lyrics behind one of the catchiest songs of the ’90s, “mmmbop”. Hanson had not only reminded fans of their roots but also demonstrated their growth as artists, leaving the audience with a renewed appreciation for their timeless music and undeniable talent.

Night 2 was a stark contrast from the previous nights calm acoustic performance. Phantom Planet’s performance was a high-energy spectacle that electrified the crowd. The band took the stage with a powerful presence, launching into a dynamic set filled with their signature sound. Hits like “California” and “Always on My Mind” were met with enthusiastic cheers, as fans sang along passionately. The infectious energy of the full band, with driving rhythms and vibrant guitar riffs, created an exhilarating atmosphere. The night reached its peak during the final song, where the band ignited the crowd with a lively performance of “California,” leaving everyone’s voices hoarse from screaming the timeless lyrics at the top of our lungs.

With a simple strum of the guitar, we were immediately transported back to the ’90s with floods of excitement washed over the crowd. The amazing harmonies were back, but this time, complemented by a lively performance where yet again, the brothers flawlessly changed instruments and positions on stage. Giving each brother a chance to shine, they all took their turns having their own solo songs to perform, while being backed by their supportive brothers. The crowd on the ground and in the balcony were out of their seats and dancing non-stop.
Hanson has seemed to perfect their craft , as they blended various musical styles from pop to rock and even hints of soul. The growth the trio has accomplished in their career is one for the books, that’s for sure. By the end of the night, fans left the venue with smiles on their faces, grateful for a night filled with nostalgia, joy, and a renewed appreciation for the timeless talent of Hanson.

We want to wish Matthew Sweet a quick and healthy recovery as he overcomes his illness! Matthew was set to perform alongside Hanson on their tour for the Night 1’s Acoustic Sets, but had to drop off the tour right before the Toronto show. Be sure to check him out when he comes back around!
Stepping in for the remaining of the tour is Hanson’s good friend John Calvin Abney, who will be performing every Night 1, except for the Austin show where they will welcome hometown favourite Ben Kweller!
The Underneath Experience wraps up in Los Angeles, California on November 11, 2024.
