As the crowd started filling MTelus, a local theatre located in Downtown Montreal, on May 15 2024, you knew it was going to be a good night. The place was packed with fans who enjoyed metal but with a twist: the headliner Our Last Night is mostly known for their heavy covers of pop songs!
Before getting into details about them however, two opening acts, Normandie from Stockholm, Sweden and Broadside from Richmond, Virginia took the stage and made a great impact on fans. Both artists were quite similar in sound yet offered their own unique styles on stage.
Normandie played a new song that was released this year called “Serotonin”. The crowd enjoyed every moment of their set list containing 7 songs.
Broadside also hit it off with the crowd playing 10 songs. They played songs like “Cruel” & “One Last Time” that had been released back in 2023. They were great interacting with the fans even though the lead singer of the band, Ollie Baxter, unfortunately was feeling under the weather. Other than a few voice cracks that he laughed off, they did not disappoint!
Both bands did the honour of letting the crowd know that they will be meeting fans after their set. Overall, both opening acts were a great choice for touring with Our Last Night.
Moving on to the band that made the building shake, especially up top on the balcony. Our Last Night opened the show performing “Shape of You”, a cover of the original song by Ed Sheeran. This band does cover songs and makes it unique in their own way by adding some metal screams (no pig squealing though). Throughout the night they played some of the most popular songs that fans all around the world would know and enjoy. Some songs from Taylor Swift for all the Swifties, Noah Kahan, Tate McRae, Adele, and much more. They also included two of their own songs “Graveyard” and “Sunrise” to the set list which made it even more personal. The band greatly appreciated the chance to perform in Montreal and continued to thank the audience after each song, reminding them that it was “like the 20th time that they have played in Montreal”.
The audience made it clear how interested they were. There was crowd surfing, jumping up and down, yelling, singing along. Metal fans know how to party. Everyone was delighted to be at MTelus to watch them perform a great set list.
To finish off the night, Our Last Night performed “Iris” by The Goo Goo Dolls, complete with confetti shooting out of a canon at the end, making for a fantastic conclusion to a magical evening. Everyone had the chance to catch some confetti, from the floor to the balcony.
Merch was also available in the back of the theatre for all three groups. Prices were quite reasonable for concert merch, and they were actually really nice. Fans took advantage of it!
Overall, the show was a blast and very much worth the trip to MTelus.
