Last night, music fans in Ottawa were treated to an unforgettable concert featuring KT Tunstall and opener Pre-Loved.

The Bronson Centre Music Theatre was the venue for this exciting event, which drew a relatively salt and pepper crowd (I can say that because I am of that awesome generation) but unfortunately did not seem to be completely sold out. Pre-Loved, the opening act, took to the stage and immediately showed off his talent with loop instrumentation. However, his slow, moody, and reverberating sound didn’t quite match the upbeat songs of KT Tunstall. Although Pre-Loved seemed like a cute kid, his music was not to everyone’s taste. However, he redeemed himself in the eyes of some with a cover of Joni Mitchell’s “Come In From the Cold” as his last song of the night.

KT Tunstall was a true standout. Her talent as a musician and performer was evident from the moment she hit the stage. With her half Scottish, half American accent, she entertained the audience not only with her music but also with her witty banter. She introduced her band from Taiwan, referring to the equipment surrounding her, which had the audience laughing. KT Tunstall’s use of loop instrumentation was also impressive, and she used it to create a one-woman show that sounded like a full band was accompanying her. Her performance was so good that it made me wonder if she is a perfectionist who prefers to just do things herself. It certainly worked for her, and the audience was completely engaged with her performance.

The highlights of the night included her renditions of “Black Horse and a Cherry Tree” and a kick-ass tune called “Madame Trudeau,” which was all about our very own Maggie, wife of Pierre. Although this was a general admission fully seated event, KT Tunstall’s performance had everyone up and dancing. She proved to be not just a super talented musician and performer, but also a funny and engaging personality. It’s clear that she has a real connection with her fans and knows how to put on an unforgettable show.
