Tennyson King wrapping up his nationwide tour in Ontario

Nomadic indie-folk musician, Tennyson King, has been travelling across Canada tour in support of his recently released album, Good Company.

“I am so excited to get back on the road and start sharing my music to people in real life,” says Tennyson about his cross Canada tour. “Along with the excitement there are some nerves too as I’ve been grounded for almost two years, so it will take a little adjustment to be moving from town to town playing shows again. I think bringing music back into the world is important not only for me but for everyone right now. We all need to start feeling the sense of community, joy and human connection that has been missing.”

We caught up with Tennyson at the tour kick-off at the Station on Jasper in Edmonton last month. It was a smaller show but it was nice to be able to walk into a venue to be introduced to an artist I was previously unfamiliar with. I had listened to his album on streaming but it’s hard to make a true determination of an artist based solely on their recordings. A good example, for me, is the Tragically Hip. I was never a big fan of their recordings but after seeing them live for the first time I was hooked. From then on even their recordings felt different, better, for me.

It was a smaller intimate setting that night at the Station but it worked for Tennyson. He was able to connect with the audience and they were able to engage with the stories behind his music. I was intrigued by his performance in Edmonton so I sent a photographer out to cover his show in Kingston at the Musikki Cafe, another small room in Kingston’s University district where Tennyson performed to a nearly packed house.

 

If you’re in Eastern Ontario, or Toronto, and are able to get out to one of the four remaining shows definitely do so. It’ll be interesting to watch as his career grows to see how his live show will evolve but I can definitely see him become a regular on the Canadian festival scene.

Saturday’s show at Avant-Garde in Ottawa features local openers Matt Oliver and our own Jessica Lavallee. Of course you don’t want to miss the grand finale of the tour on Sunday March 27 at the El Mocambo where Tennyson will be joined by Terra Lightfoot and The Red Hill Valleys for a matinee show hosted by Sarah Burke from SiriusXM.

Tennyson was selected to participate in the 2020 Canadian Songwriter Challenge to work with Terra Lightfoot, Adrian X (Drake, The Weeknd), and Moe Berg (Pursuit of Happiness). In May 2021, Tennyson released his first Chinese language single, 生命的进度, in support of Asian Heritage Month and to represent a voice for Asian artists in Canada. Followed up by 自在 in June, these two songs garnered recognition by Mandarin, Cantonese, and English press alike, as Tennyson received airtime and was featured for an interview in Cantonese on Toronto’s prestigious Chinese-Canadian radio station, Fairchild Radio 1430.
