On October 8th, quickly rising folk band Mt.Joy brought their smooth message-driven songs to a sold-out crowd at the Danforth Theatre in Toronto.

Mt. Joy a now successful genre-bending five-piece band started with two guys who disliked their day jobs in LA. Matt Quinn (vocals) and Sam Cooper (guitar) grew up together outside of Philadelphia and by coincidence found each other in later life. Both wanted an escape from their day to day so they started playing music together. Now the band consists of three more: Michael Byrnes on bass, drummer Sotiris Eliopoulos and keyboardist Jackie Miclau. Mt. Joy has gone on to mainstream success with millions of streams on Spotify and performance features on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and The Conan O’Brien Show.

The night got started off with the opener Fleece. Their musical style blends Psychedelic Rock, Grunge, and Jazz to make a style of indie rock/pop that is unique to them.  Fleece played a thirty-minute set and from the first song had the crowd engaged. Their engagement came from their great stage confidence, spot-on performances, and their comedic ability. Fleece is a band with a promising future in music ahead of them.

There was a thirty-minute gap to set the stage between when Fleece finished their set and when Mt. Joy was to start. The crowd was eagerly waiting and discussing their favorite Mt. Joy songs and how they were excited about the upcoming album. Finally, it was time, the band stepped out and the crowd erupted in cheer. The first song they played to kick things off was I’m Your Wreck. This song has an Americana vibe and put everyone in the right headspace for the rest of the concert.

The show proved Mt. Joy is at the very start of a successful career. Their musical talent shined, and lead singer Matt Quinn’s vocal held strong and dynamic throughout the show. The crowd knew every word to every song they played that has been released and the few songs they played from their upcoming album in 2020 show great growth and make the future for Mt. Joy look very bright.
