In kicking off their first headlining tour in nearly a decade, quite past the scheduled time, but I guess better late than never, the Jonas Brothers opened with “Rollercoaster,” straight out of their latest album, ‘Happiness Begins’ incidentally also the name of the tour.
Fans were as enthusiastic as one could imagine. It was a night of hugs, screams and the ever present selfies for an audience that enthusiastically greeted Kevin, Joe and Nick Jonas as they hit the stage in their blue, green and orange suits. Song after song, it became evident that the brothers had missed the thrill of touring and connecting with their fans after their break up in 2013.
Eventually the trio waded through the audience to reach a small stage at the back of the arena, were they performed “Jealous” and “Cake by the Ocean,” and gave fans on the far side a chance to see their idols up and close.
After two hours of tracing their musical history, the only negative note on an otherwise amazing evening was when the brothers wrapped up their set earlier and left the stage rather abruptly without any explanation only to find later via their social media that they had been advised by their management team to leave the stage due to technical difficulties.
Unfortunately it deprived their adoring fans of an encore that according to the set list would have been their two biggest hits: 2008’s “Burning Up” and this year’s “Sucker,” their first number one hit on the Billboard charts.
A sold out arena was left confused and in anger as they waited for the brothers to come back on stage. There was no announcement or any notice given and in the end it came down to security to eject the fans from the arena as many refused to leave. It has been shared with me that the fact that they were almost going to go past the 11pm noise, by-law curfew, due to a late start, may have also played a role but I guess we’ll never know. Even now, just over 2 weeks later, the official reason for the early end is still unknown but more reports are pointing at some sort of structural failure with the large screen behind the stage.
Hopefully if you happened to attend the next day for their second sold out show in Toronto you were able to enjoy the show as it was meant to be. However If you happened to miss both shows or were only at the first one, don’t despair. You will have a chance to catch them once again when they return to Toronto in November 2019, you can get your tickets here.
