For this first time ever, Old Dominion brought their laid-back country music to Newfoundland on May 12, playing in front of a packed crowd at the Mile One Centre in St. John’s.

As the last Atlantic Canadian date of their Make It Sweet tour, the group brought several truckloads of equipment to the island by ferry. Before the show, they all got screeched in backstage. For those who don’t know, that’s a local tradition in which “come from aways” must kiss a cod and take a shot of screech to become honorary Newfoundlanders.

Before Old Dominion, the crowd got to hear from two Canadian opening acts.

Kicking things off was Jason Benoit, who is originally from Fox Island River on the west coast of Newfoundland. Sunday’s show was sort of a homecoming for Benoit, who wore a St. John’s Edge jersey, the NBL Canada team that calls Mile One Centre home.

Up next was the Washboard Union, who were also in St. John’s for the first time ever. The crowd was excited to see them as well as the B.C.-based trio brought their outstanding harmonies to the big stage.

Finally, Old Dominion gave the crowd the show they were waiting for, playing all of their hits, as well as the songs they’ve written for other artists.

Old Dominion promised they would come back to St. John’s again, so let’s hope it happens soon. Keep an eye on their website www.weareolddominion.com
