World of Dance Electrifies O-town

Marketed as “the biggest dance competition in the world” World of Dance is an American reality dance competition series on NBC. The competition features 50 of the world’s best dancers and teams competing for a $1 million prize, with celebrity judges Jennifer Lopez, Derek Hough, Ne-Yo, and host Jenna Dewan-Tatum, the wife of Channing Tatum of Magic Mike fame for the ladies in the crowd. Throughout the 10-episode series, dancers from of all ages, backgrounds, and dance styles compete and are scored by the panel of judges.

The show began casting in July 2016 after Lopez announced it via Twitter, welcoming any and all dancers, no matter the style or age, to enter the competition. Dancers came from around the world, from Colombia to Russia. Some of the Season 1 Performers were showcased last night during the Ottawa stop of the World of Dance Live! tour. The audience ranged from little girls with glitter in their hair and a sparkle in their eyes to more a more mature group of dancers who were obviously dancers based on their impeccable posture and graceful gaits.

Last night’s dancers included solo artists, duos, and groups. Of note, contemporary dancer and fan favorite Eva Igo from St.Paul Minnesota, at just 14 years of age, is anything but an average teenager. The show finalist performed a number that highlighted her power, flexibility and tumbling abilities and garnered wild applause from the audience.

The breakdance troup Super Cr3w from Las Vegas was also a bit hit in the national capital last night. Formed in 2000, the crew has seen much success including the opening of three dance studios, appearances in movies such as Battle of The Year, Planet Bboy, Meet the Spartans, You Got Served, and Honey 2. They have also appeared in music videos and toured with Fergie, Madonna, Gwen Stefani, Sean Paul, Justin Timberlake, Paul McCartney and Missy Elliott, and performed and taught at the first White House Dance Series hosted by Michelle Obama.

Toronto ballroom cabaret dancers Luka & Jenalyn were equally impressive. Luka’s athletic physique and supported the sleek flexibility of Jenalyn’s twists around her his head and mid-air flips. Their techniques is acrobatic, rhythmic and a treat to watch.

11 year old Diana Pombo from Miami, Florida who competed in the Junior category on the show was equally spectacular. Channeling her inner-contortionist, she actually touched her forehead with her foot. What?!?

In June of this year NBC renewed the series for a second season based on its solid ratings. Even if you are not a dancer or the parent of a dancer, give it a try. You may be surprised at how entertaining these talented artists and athletes can be.
