Remember the 90’s? How about the 80’s? Remember the amazing music we used to listen to on our Sony Walkmans? Well over the course of the next month, or so, TD Place in Ottawa is going to take you on a journey back to the good ol’ days of the 80’s and 90’s.
I Love The 90s Tour
Our retro journey will begin on Thursday night when the “I Love The 90’s Tour” rolls into town. You’ll be spending the night reminiscing of all your favourite things from the 90s, from the ever famous movie line “I’m the king of the world” by Leonardo DiCaprio in the box-office smash Titanic to sitting around the small screen watching Friends. It was also the decade of the Disney Renaissance with films like Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King soaring to the top of the Box-Office. It was also the decade that would see Star Wars return to the silver screen with Star Wars – Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace. But what was better than the music of the 90’s. From hip-hop to grunge the decade was ruled by groups like Green Day, the Spice Girls and Nirvana. On Thursday night TD Place will take a musical journey into the past featuring 90’s greats Vanilla Ice, Color Me Badd, Salt-N-Peppa, Young MC and Rob Base. To celebrate be sure to check out our exclusive Spotify Playlist! A very limited number of tickets just became available for this show but they won’t last long!
OLPxIME
The retro journey doesn’t stop Thursday. For those of you who aren’t into the whole hip-hop scene and favour a bit more rock and roll fear not because the ultimate Canadian rock reunion tour is rolling into TD Place on Friday night. That’s right I Mother Earth and Edwin are back together and they are coming to town with Our Lady Peace in tow. OLPxIME with the Standstills are guaranteed to rock your world like they did back in the 90s and into the 2000’s.
Culture Club with Platinum Blonde
Is 80’s new-wave rock more your thing? Boy George and Culture Club will hit TD Place on November 1 with special guests, Toronto’s own Platinum Blonde. I don’t think anything screams 80’s more than these two bands. I was in high school in the 80’s (yes I’m old, don’t remind me) and these bands were in their prime and every teenaged girl was fan-girling over Platinum Blonde (us guys were fans too but back then it wasn’t cool to admit it). So unless “you really want to hurt me” and leave me “crying over you” you’ll definitely want to check out this show.
Roger Hodgson
The fun is far from over at TD Place as they’re going to take you way back to the late 60’s into the early 80’s as Roger Hodgson, former co-frontman and founding member of progressive rock band Supertramp, rolls into town on November 8. Chances are if you weren’t around in the 70’s and 80’s you likely have little idea who Supertramp or Hodgson are. Well let me tell you they have been a long time favourite of mine and having actually seen Roger live I can attest that this is one show that you won’t want to miss. Supertramp is one of the classic bands that laid the groundwork for many of the bands we see today. One thing I can guarantee is that if you “Give a Little Bit” and see this show you won’t be saying “Goodbye Stranger” to Hodgson at the end of the night and you’ll want to “Take the Long Way Home” listening to Supertramp and Hodgson classics on the drive and when you get home no doubt you’ll be a “Dreamer” dreaming about the incredible show you just saw and you’ll be “Bloody Well Right” when you wish you could see it again the next night, in fact I’m fairly certain you’ll still be talking about the show the next morning as you have “Breakfast in Canada (America)”.
Marianas Trench with Sean Hook
Later in November it’ll be time to jump back into that time machine and come back a bit closer to present day as Canadian rockers Marianas Trench bring their Last Crusade Tour to TD Place with special guest Shawn Hook. If you saw Marianas Trench at RBC Bluesfest a few years ago you know you are in for a high energy show that few other than Josh Ramsay can provide. One thing is certain these boys from Vancouver have never been tied down to one specific sound or style with their albums ranging in theme from Hard Rock to Pop Punk to Symphonic Rock, in other words be prepared for anything. I know that they blew me away at RBC Bluesfest and I’m looking forward to catching them back in Ottawa on November 18.
Simple Plan, All Time Low and Pvris
Immediately following Marianas Trench, on November 19, another Canadian rock band, Simple Plan, will roll into Ottawa with special guests All Time Low and Pvris. The rocked the crowd at RBC Bluesfest a few years ago and “I’d Do Anything” to see them do it again at TD Place without a doubt the show will be “Perfect”, the show is taking place inside the arena so I doubt we’ll be “Singing in the Rain”. Those of you who miss this show will likely have a good night sleep on November 19 but “The Rest of Us” will be saying “I Don’t Wanna Go To Bed”. It’s going to be an amazing night that you won’t want to miss!
2017 and beyond
There’s plenty more coming up in 2017 as well with shows by The Arkells and Billy Talent recently announced, the 2017 Grey Cup and with the huge 150th Anniversary of Canada taking place in 2017 I have a feeling that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Whatever happens watch for Sound Check Entertainment to be there with full coverage before, during and after! For tickets and more information on any of the shows listed above visit www.tdplace.ca
