Canada may have lost a music icon in Stompin’ Tom Conners, however, it doesn’t take long to find someone carrying on the honky tonk tradition of Americana style country music. Corb Lund, a true blooded Alberta boy, brought his Winter Campaign for the “Things That Can’t Be Undone” tour to The London Music Hall on Monday Feb 15, 2016, in London ON.
Lund invited his friends from Raleigh North Carolina, USA, American Aquarium, to bring their alternative country sound to the snowy north. They had lots to say about the amount of snow we had gotten in London, ON, over the weekend. However, nothing stopped the diehard country fans in London from trekking out to catch these guys open the show with a solid 30-minute set of originals. I’d be lying if I said I was overly excited to hear these guys play, but to my delight, they lit up the room and had feet tapping. They gave everyone what they came for which was some classic alternative country sounds. To learn more about these guys, check them out online at www.americanaquarium.com
After a quick stage change, it was time for the man of the night. The crowd was anxious to see that classic black hat make it’s way up on the stage in the midst of the red glow.
Lund lead off the night with a few new songs off, “Things That Can’t Be Undone “, before he jumped into the vast array of hits he has amassed over the years. Coming out with his dark cowboy hat and bandana over his face, you had to wonder if he had just ridden in from the wild west. A few songs from behind the bandana, where all you could see were his eyes under his hat, and it was time to fire up the Music Hall. By now, the crowd was out of their seats and stomping along to some of his classics. He rocked classic hits like,” Hurtin’ Albertans”, “Getting Down the Mountain”, and of course,” Hair in My Eyes Like a Highland Steer”. During the almost two-hour long set, he played a variety of songs from his 9 studio albums. Of course, the crowd was more than happy to help out with, “Rye Whiskey “, and, “Truck Got Stuck “.
From start to finish, Corb impressed the crowd with his sing-along songs and gritty guitar sounds. He had young and old up dancing and singing along in the aisles. It was amazing to hear the crowd belt out the words to, “Rye Whiskey”, from above, while on the second level looking down on the packed main floor of The London Music Hall.
